Hey, I'm Emma

I'm a certified birth and postnatal doula in Frome in Somerset. I support mums as they embark on the beautiful, life-changing experience of motherhood, whether its your first rodeo or you are going from 1 -2 or 2-3 or even more. It can feel exhausting, emotional, and sometimes a little overwhelming. I offer support from pregnancy through birth preparation sessions, in person doula support for home birth and hospital births. I offer postnatal support giving you gentle, nurturing support as you adjust to life with your new baby. My role is to make your early weeks feel a little lighter - whether that means a listening ear, a warm meal, practical help around the house, or simply space to rest and recover.

Every family’s journey is unique, and together we’ll create the kind of care that feels right for you.

You deserve to be looked after too. Let’s make sure you feel supported, confident, and cared for as you settle into this new chapter.

Kind words

In the session I had with Emma before my elective C-section, she provided me with the knowledge and insight about the procedure and my choices during the birth. Previously feeling very apprehensive and anxious, I felt well informed and reassured and well prepared for what was to come. I learnt there were options and choices that I had not been aware of and that I could tailor my birth experience to my needs and ideals far more than expected. Emma is warm and empathetic and very supportive and respectful of my anxieties and wishes helping me feel reassured about the birth and resulting in a positive birth experience.

Claire

Emma was such a great help in those early days postpartum. She was warm and nice to chat to as well as helping with a range of things depending what support I needed. As each day is different she adapted and used her initiative to do whatever was required. It was perfect to be able to have a shower, get a hot coffee and have a tidy kitchen and have the toddler entertained and the baby cared for during this time. I definitely would recommend Emma as a post- natal doula for extra support and breathing space.

Kate

Emma provided postnatal support after the birth of my twins when my partner was away for work. I felt totally confident leaving the babies in her care. The practical and emotional support she provided during this particular daunting period made things feel much easier.

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained, non-medical birth support professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period. A doula supports the birthing person, their partner, and their family, helping them feel informed, confident, safe, and cared for throughout their pregnancy and birth journey.

During labour and birth, a doula offers continuous support that may include comfort measures, breathing techniques, reassurance, guidance, advocacy, and practical help such as providing food, drinks, and encouragement. Doulas also help parents understand their birth choices and preferences, ensuring they feel empowered to make informed decisions.

Unlike midwives and doctors, doulas do not provide medical care, perform clinical tasks, or make medical decisions. Instead, they work alongside healthcare professionals to complement the care already being provided. Research has shown that continuous doula support during labour can contribute to a more positive birth experience and may be associated with improved outcomes for both mother and baby.

The main goal of a doula is to ensure that parents feel emotionally supported, respected, and confident throughout pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood.

Frequently asked questions

When should I book a doula?

I generally take bookings for birth and postnatal work well in advance because building a relationship is so important to both me and expectant parents. Some clients decide on a doula very last minute and book literally weeks, sometimes days, before they are due. If I’m available we can arrange to meet and if not then I’m very happy to recommend alternative doulas.

What area are you based and what hospitals do you cover?

I am based in Frome in Somerset. I cover areas within an hours drive of Frome usually. I can support births at RUH in Bath, Frome birth centre, Chippenham birth centre and Yeovil hospital.

Do doula's support Dad's / partners too?

Yes absolutely, many partners want to be as supportive and involved as possible but may feel unsure about what to expect or how best to help during labour. A doula helps partners feel more calm, confident, and prepared so they can fully support the birthing person and enjoy the experience together.

My goal as a doula is to help partners step into their role as a new parent with greater confidence, reassurance, and understanding. During labour, I can guide partners with comfort techniques, explain what is happening throughout the different stages of birth, and provide encouragement and reassurance when needed. This allows partners to stay present, connected, and involved without feeling overwhelmed or pressured to “know everything.”

A doula never replaces the role of a dad or birth partner. Instead, we work alongside each other as part of the support team. I will always respect a couple’s relationship, privacy, and personal space. Having a doula does not mean having an extra person constantly intruding or taking over. Rather, it means having experienced support in the background, helping both parents feel informed, supported, and cared for throughout the birth journey.

Do you take a deposit?

Yes, I do. The deposit secures your booking. I generally take half of the full fee as a deposit and the balance closer to birth or once baby is born, for postnatal support. Payment plans are also available to suit you.

How can I benefit from having a doula?

Having a doula by your side during pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period can provide valuable emotional, practical, and informational support. The people around you during the childbirth year can have a huge impact on how safe, calm, and confident you feel during what is both an empowering and vulnerable time.

During pregnancy and labour, a doula offers continuous reassurance, evidence-based information, comfort measures, and support to help you feel informed and prepared for birth. While birth can be unpredictable, having a trusted and familiar person alongside you can make a real difference to your overall experience.

The postnatal period is also a time of major transition and adjustment. A doula can provide ongoing reassurance, encouragement, and practical support as you adapt to life with your new baby.

A doula works alongside your partner, midwives, and medical team but never replacing them. Doulas do not provide clinical care or make medical decisions, but instead complement the support you are already receiving to help you feel cared for, confident, and supported throughout your journey.

Is there an agreement?

Yes, they are not legal documents but there is an agreement for birth support and one for postnatal support which simply outline the terms of my services and our commitment to one another.
